Tetra’s worldwide success story began over half a century ago with a revolutionary invention.In around 1950, the young scientist Dr. rer. nat. Ulrich Baensch bred tropical ornamental fish in Hanover. At that time, it was an unusual hobby with very few followers. The biggest problem experienced by Germany’s approx. 50,000 aquarists was that it was often very difficult to obtain live food for their fish.

Dr. Baensch then had an idea that was to revolutionise fishkeeping:he developed complete foods for fish. In 1951, Baensch founded Tetra, and TetraMin was created in 1955. TetraMin comprises four types of flake with vitamins, which give the highly successful product its name: the Greek word Tetra for four, and Min, the third syllable of the word vitamin. The product in the yellow tin with the brown lid turned the exclusive enjoyment of a chosen few into a hobby that fascinates over three million people today in Germany alone. The invention of the first industrially manufactured dry flake food for tropical ornamental fish laid the foundation for the success of our company.

Today, Tetra, which employs over 800 people worldwide and sells its products in more than 90 countries, is the world’s largest manufacturer of food and care products in the field of aquatics and water gardening. In 2007, we achieved a turnover of around US$ 275 million worldwide. In 2005, Tetra was incorporated into United Pet Group, owned by Spectrum Brands, a US-listed global manufacturer of consumer goods, based in Atlanta/Georgia, which has an excellent range of brands: e.g. Varta and Remington in the business areas of batteries and personal hygiene, 8in1 in the pets sector, and other brands pertaining to the house and garden. With around 7100 employees, Spectrum Brands achieved in 2007 a turnover of around US$ 2 billion.
